Release Notes
Late July 2026 Updates
July 2026 Updates
- New shapes, no longer do you have to stay a square, hex and circles are now supported
- Sign in with Google. You can now log in with a Google account alongside GitHub
- New map data under the hood (Overture Maps). Laser Map Studio now builds your maps from Overture Maps instead of pulling from OpenStreetMap's raw API. Same streets, buildings, water and parks you're used to but it loads noticeably faster, and the live preview now streams as vector tiles straight to your browser.
- Faster, instant-updating preview. The map preview loads quicker, and toggling a layer on or off (roads, water, buildings, paths) now updates the map instantly. Because the map already shows exactly what you'll get, I removed the old "Preview" button one less click before you generate.
- Fixed: roads floating in 3D models. Some 3D (3MF) exports had roads and bridges spiking or floating above the terrain. This was a side effect of the new map data marking an entire road as a "bridge" when only a short stretch actually is. Bridges now lift only where they're genuinely bridges, so your terrain stays clean.
- Fixed: park paths & footways now render. Walking paths, footways, and park trails weren't showing up when selected. They now appear correctly — and the layer is relabeled "Paths & Footways" so it's clearer what it includes.
- Live credit balance. Your credit count updates in real time the moment a generation finishes or credits are added no page refresh needed. Generations that include elevation now show their credit cost up front, too.
Building something cool or hit a snag? Come tell me on Discord — I want to see what you're making.
June 2026 Updates
- All-new studio layout design your map in three clear steps down the left sidebar: pick your area (paste a Google Maps link straight in!), choose Laser cut or 3D print, and generate.
- 3D models that respect the terrain roads, parks, railways, and buildings now hug real hills instead of floating above valleys, and rivers carve shallow channels that follow their slope. Models come out watertight and printer-ready.
- Find and reuse your maps the new My Maps panel keeps your history with real place names ("Golden, Colorado" instead of "Unnamed Location"), re-downloads for 7 days, and one-click Regenerate that restores a past map's exact area and settings.
- Faster, clearer generation map data downloads in parallel and is reused between runs (tweaking a setting no longer re-fetches anything), a live progress bar shows exactly what's happening at each stage, and you can cancel a run mid-flight.
January Updates
- Removed "grass" from Parks and Green Spaces, this was returning peoples lawns which would crowd the look of the space. Let me know if you would like this added as a selectable option.
- Removed some legacy code and updated some packages to keep the app more stable.
- Fixed ski trail mode which had an incorrect projections and moved it to step 1.
- Added new feature allowing you to download a DXF/SVG with the topographic features on their own "canvas", allowing for easy laser cutting.
Jan 9th Updates
- I updated our OSM provider to use a different source and refactored so that the OSM data is coming from the browser, this should increase reliability of fetching the OSM data. As before a failed request will not cost a credit.
- Refined the UI to improve the logging messages and make it clearer what is happening during map generation and added accordians to the right config panel.
- Migrated to a different DB backend to improve scalability and reliability of the service.
- I want to hear about what you are making, please join the discord and share some of your creations or feature requests.
- Deeper refactor for better laser support for XTool creative studio and layering of different road types. Export a DXF and check it for yourself!
- Fixed frame bug.
